November 2009: First Guangxi Orchid Conference
"Would I like to speak at the First Guangxi International Orchid Conservation Symposium in Leye in May?" In addition to being an opportunity to learn more about the orchids of China from some Chinese researchers, there was a field trip to the Yachang Orchid Nature Preserve, and the prospect of seeing large populations of Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum in bloom. Who could resist such an invitation?
Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden
At the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, many of the living collections are grouped into geographical areas and themes helping to distinguish the plants' origins from around the world. The historical area contains one of Lucky Baldwin's homes and contains trees such as ginkgoes, eucalyptus, English oaks and Mexican fan palms, which he planted. Adjacent to the historical adobe there is a beautiful rose garden featuring heritage varieties. The herb garden is located...
Vandas Come in All Sizes
Aeridinae species and hybrids come in all sizes from the delights of tropical gardens, Vandopsis at six feet (2M.) to the jewel-like Schoenorchis at one inch (2.5Cm.). Greenhouse, window sill and light growers in temperate climes usually prefer plants toward the more petite size of this range. There are plenty to choose...

August 2009: Stalky & Family
Rummaging through second-hand bookshops has long been one of my passions and Lewes, in Sussex on the south coast of England, is one of my favourite hunting grounds. The town lies on the north flank of the South Downs, just northeast of Brighton, home to the extravagantly ornate Royal Pavilion of the Prince Regent. Lewes has, however
President's Communication: Changing Times
I WANT TO REPORT A NUMBER OF significant changes in our organization as a result of the Board meeting on Saturday, June 27. As you know, the organization is still trying to turn the business around in order to have a successful future, and the Board members thought if we did not act in a timely fashion there would not be sufficient time to ensure it. We are in an...
President’s Communication: Keeping the Garden Open
We knew when coming out of the last Board meeting in Houston, Texas, in late April 2009 that we had our work cut out for us in the next couple of months. For one, we had postponed the decision of whether to keep the garden open past June of this year pending more information on the budget.
July 2009: Taiwan International Orchid Show 2009
Lights! Cameras! Action! In March 2009, orchid enthusiasts descended on the Taiwan International Orchid Show to witness a spectacle of color and world-class displays of orchids — species and hybrids alike. In the July issue of Orchids, I wrote about the event and showed some photographs to illustrate the beauty and diversity of this annual event that is gaining popularity worldwide. Here, additional portraits show off some of the award-winning orchids as well as other sights from this impressive show.
July 2009: Tampa Orchid Club Receives DASSA
The Tampa Orchid Club has reached one of its highest achievements in its long history — receiving the American Orchid Society’s Distinguished Affiliated Society Service Award. Last year, the Tampa Orchid Club celebrated its golden anniversary. It was established in 1957 as a daytime club to support those orchid growers who could not attend night meetings. Mrs. R.A. Davis, an avid garden club member, horticulturist and orchid lover, started the club with her orchid friends who wanted to study orchids.
July 2009: In Memoriam — Arthur Kaplan, MD
Arthur Kaplan, MD, the most kind and gentle man I have ever known, died of leukemia April 14, 2009. In one sense, Arthur was the epitome of the southern gentleman — urbane and courteous, but in a deeper way Arthur was the embodiment of the humanism of the great 20th century Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber. Deeply rooted in his faith, Arthur had developed an “I-Thou” relationship with his god and the universe. He constantly interacted with the world humorously and intimately. He received the National Conference of Christians and Jews’ 1995 Humanitarian Award, and the Joseph H. Strelitz Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service in 1999 from the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater.
