Max was a Professor of Biology at Southwestern College in Kansas for 33 years, Chair of the Natural Science Division for seven years and an administrator for the past 12 years. During his tenure as Chairman of the division, they built a new science building in 1998. A new greenhouse was built at the college in 1972 and a friend gave them an orchid. The college collection now has about 2,500 orchid plants, over 1,000 of these are species. Roger Brown urged Max to get into the judging program and he became an accredited judge in 1992. Max was appointed a Trustee of the AOS to fill out someone else’s term and served seven years in that capacity. The Great Plains Judging Center was the local center and Max served as the Chair for five years. He has served on the nominating committee, governance committee, and presently serves on the Finance Committee of the AOS.
In 2004, the Kansas Orchid Society hosted the AOS and SWROGA spring show. He was co-chair of the show and is co-chair of the AOS spring 2012 meeting in Wichita.
Max’s main training has been in ornithology and has co-authored three books on Kansas ornithology, the most recent released in 2011. He has done field work in many countries, particularly in SE Asia and Africa. Presently, he is a research associate at the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History. Doctoral work was done at Ohio State University in horticulture.
