Bulbophyllum-tripaleum-2019-03-04***Confirmed as Bulbophyllum dhaninavati (April 2019)***

Judging Center: Northeast

Award Number: 20194520

Award Date: March 02, 2019

Awarded As: Bulbophyllum tripaleum

Awarded as Bulb. tripaleum, now considered a synonym of Bulb. dhaninivatii. The two concepts are synonymized by Vermuelen who states that the presence or absence of extended sepal paleae is variable and does not represent a character significant enough to separate the concepts. The petals and lip of the two concepts are otherwise indistinguishable.

Thirty-eight fascinating, semi-closed, micro-miniature flowers arranged circumferentially on three pendent rachis borne individually on three upright inflorescences up to 5.5 cm tall which emerge basally from three new, medium green, conical pseudobulbs 1.3 cm wide by 1.7 cm tall of a 6 pseudobulb plant mounted on an irregularly shaped chunk of cork; sepals exterior dark magenta and hirsute, interior dark magenta striped yellow green, each sepal bearing a mobile, hanging, 0.1 cm wide x 0.7 cm long ivory palae heavily barred and stippled dark magenta; minute petals ivory, single linear dark magenta stripe centrally, nearly enclosed by sepals; lip dark magenta; anther cap bright yellow; awarded for proportionate and evocative display between compact rachis and pseudobulbs, as well as unique sepaline features which freely tremble in the breeze and which are the basis for this species specific epithet; native to Thailand; confirmed by SITF

Note - WCSPF has this as synonymous with Bulbophyllum dhaninivatii Seidenf., Felicit. Vol. Southeast Asian Stud. 1: 154 (1965). However, when we searched the latter species the images were nowhere close to what we saw at judging.
