Dear members of the SITF,

This plant was labeled Malaxis latifolia and awarded as such, consistent with a CBR given to the clone ‘Frisky” in 1983.  I have attached the award slip, a copy of the award photo and proof of the existing CBR in Orchids Plus.

An interesting dilemma has arisen.  As part of the process for entering the data in the JC program, I checked the name Malaxis latifolia in the World Checklist and discovered it is a synonym for at least two plants.  One synonym is Liparis latifolia which has a CBR to the clone ‘Crownfox,’ from November 1998; it is clearly a different plant.  The other synonym is reflected in the lengthy documentation I have attached from the World Checklist – the papers suggest Malaxis latifolia is s synonym for Dienia ophrydis, (see the term Malaxis latifolia under the list for Heterotypic Synonyms) or Malaxis ophrydis.  The former name is accepted by a variety of authorities but not Kew, as least as I read these papers; the latter name is accepted by Kew.

It has been my understanding that the AOS follows Kew so I am requesting confirmation that this plant awarded as Malaxis latifolia is Malaxis ophrydis

Because of the file sizes for the pages scanned from the World checklist, I am attaching them in a separate email.

Thank you.
