Encyclia-seelligera-2022-05-08

Encyclia-seelligera-2022-05-08***SITF determined this plant to be Encyclia suaveolens, not E. selligera (Aug 2022);
A key difference between E. selligera and E. suaveolens is the length of the callus on the midlobe; drawings of Encyclia lips showing the calli can be seen in Withner, "The Cattleyas and their Relatives, Vol. V" which shows E. selligera with a short callus extending to just beyond the column and the callus of E. suaveolens extending all the way to the apex of the midlobe; the callus on this plant also extends to the apex of the midlobe, as shown in the photos; supporting photos can be seen in orchidroots.com showing some variability in color.***

Judging Center: CSNJC

Award Number: 20222299

Award Date: April 24, 2022

Awarded As: Encyclia seelligera

The exhibitor says he got it from a private collection in Southern California; he believes the plant came from Mexico.
CSNJC decided to send this to SITF to verify the ID, as so many Encyclia species look alike.
