Maxillaria-alpestris-2019-12-01

Maxillaria-alpestris-2019-12-01***Now determined to be Maxillaria bracteata (Schltr.) Ames & Correll (Dec 2020), not Maxillaria alpestris; with new information and additional photos showing the inflorescence and bracts, this plant, which was collected in Panama, matches the description and endemic location of M. bracteata; based on Eric Christenson's book on Maxillaria, M. bracteata is within a broadly defined group which includes M. bracteata, M. imbricata and M. carinata, among others; this may be part of a collection of regional variants of a single broad species; the group requires future study to better define the species of this "swarm".***

Award Date: December 16, 2019

The exhibitor originally presented the plant under the name Maxillaria alpestris and the plant was awarded under that name. The orchid was brought from Panama in 1954 as Maxillaria sp. and belongs since that time to the Montreal Botanical Garden collection.
