SITF Submissions and Findings

Dendrobium-denneanum-2022-07-10***SITF confirmed this plant as Dendrobium denneanum (Aug 2022); pseudobulbs are canelike and not swollen near the apex or base and the inflorescence has prominent, persistent bracts characteristic of D. denneanum; in comparison, canes of D. denneanum are pencil-thin the entire length; D. chrysotoxum canes are  club/spindle shaped and D. chryseum is also pencil-shaped, but swollen at the base; flower size for D. denneanum (5 cm) is slotted in between D. chrystoxum (3.5 - 5 cm) and D. chryseum (5-7 cm); this plant matches D. denneanum at 5.5 cm (W) x 4.5  cm (L).***

Dendrobium-guibertii-2022-06-19***Confirmed as Dendrobium guibertii (Jun 2022); Den. guibertii, Den. griffithianum and Den. densiflorum are very similar in flower morphology; one of the key discriminators is in the form of the pseudobulbs; Den. guibertii has elongate, thin canes whereas, Den griffithianum has shorter, stout, clavate pseudobulbs; Den. guibertii also has much longer inflorescences;  Den. guibertii has much darker lip color than does Den. densiflorum, which has a lip color the same or slightly darker than the sepals and petals; this plant has all the features described for D. guibertii.***

Dendrobium-discolor-var-broomfieldii-2022-02-28***Confirmed as Dendrobium discolor var. broomfieldii (Mar 2022); based on the key characteristics of flowers which are concolor yellow with five, white keels on the midlobe consistent with Den. discolor var. broomfieldii as described by Dr. Peter Adams, an expert in Australian Dendrobiums; this plant is a magnificent representative of this species and variety.***

Dendrobium-vannouhuysii-2022-02-25***Confirmed as Dendrobium vannouhuysii (Apr 2022); D. vannouhuysii is distinctive with alternating warty leaves that are green shaded with purple on branching stems as is apparent in this plant; matches photos on the cover of "Orchids" magazine Oct 2013, Millar's "Orchids of Papua New Guinea, Schuiteman's Dendrobiums of New Guinea and Laverack et.al.'s "Dendrobiums and its Relatives"; D. vannouhuysii is the only species that shows this combination of flower form and growth habit.***

Oxystophyllum-atropurpureum-2022-02-13***Determined to be Dendrobium atroviolaceum, not Oxystophyllum atropurpureum (Apr 2022); O. atropurpureum is similar to plants in the Aporum Section of Dendrobium with distichous leaves and very small flowers; Kew's "Plants of the World Online" has a very good example of a true O. atropurpureum and there is a description in Orchids of New Guinea as well as a description and photo of D. atroviolaceum; there is considerable confusion in the various photos in the media with O. atropurpureum being shown as D. atroviolaceum; the OW, IOSPE, and SOF has photos which match this plant.***

Dendrobium-moschatum-hv-cupreum-2021-09-19***Confirmed as Dendrobium moschatum (Yellow form) (Sep 2021); this is the bright yellow form once known as Dendrobium cupreum; however, since neither a varietal form (var.) nor a horticultural form (hv) for Den. moschatum is formally recognized, this is identified as Dendrobium moschatum (Yellow form) and we recommend adding into the award description that this is the yellow form known earlier as Dendrobium cupreum.***
