Dear David,

Angel Vale just returned from his field work and I showed
him your photos.  His first reaction was that it might be Encyclia
bipapulare based on flower color and the fact that it was from Osment.  We
discussed this at length and I went back to my records, and I would have to
agree with him, though it would be nice to have some flower measurements to
make sure we are in the same ballpark.  The lines of evidence are: sepals
and petals in your plant are very different in color from the lip.  There
is some variation in E. moebusii along these lines, but your plant would be
stretching the boundaries somewhat.  The anther cap is yellow in your
plant, but white in E. moebusii.  And I notice that the lateral lobes of
the lip are less erect than that of E. moebusii, sometimes (depending on the
angle) looking pointed.  According to Angel, most of Osment's material was
from western to central Cuba.  Angel was not sure that Osment even got to
the east where E. moebusii grows.  Sorry for the switch in ID, but it is
better to get it right.  And if you have flower measurements, that would
be helpful (or even a pressed or pickled flower). Angel did not know the
unidentified yellow-lipped Encyclia, so that remains a mystery.
