Chikanda Orchids. Conservation in the Highlands of Southern Tanzania
The ancient montane grasslands of tropical southern Tanzania are home to at least 100 species of terrestrial orchids, all uniquely beautiful and of urgent conservation concern. A unique threat to these orchids is the harvest and use of their tubers to make chikanda, a traditional food originating in northern Zambia that is sometimes described as “vegetable sausage.”
