Finding
SITF has determined this plant to be Encyclia replicata, not Encyclia oncidioides (Oct 2025). It does not match the size described in Withner's, "The Cattleyas and their relatives, volume 6". Also, the lip color is a lot more saturated than in the photos in Withners book. This plant was identified with the assistance of Dr. Ruben Sauleda, an authority in the Genus Encyclia. Dr. Sauleda said that "many plants mislabeled as oncidioides are E. replicata. I would say that the plant pictured is E. replicata. It is very variable. It also hybridizes naturally with other species making the variation greater. E. replicata normally has a much longer spike, up to 1.5 m." Characteristics of this plant also led to E. replicata being one of the listed species in the key to Encyclia.
