this is Encylia replicata....plate 26 in withner 6 - this is from a recent paper where the three species were made synonyms-
Encyclia replicata (Lindl. & Paxton) Schlechter (1920: 255). Basionym: Epidendrum replicatum Lindley & Paxton (1852: 167). Type:?
COLOMBIA (New Grenada). Without locality, July 1851, Rucker s.n.; holotype: K-L!.
Heterotypic synonyms: Encyclia maderoi Schlechter (1920: 155). Type:?COLOMBIA. Antioquia: without specific locality, 1000 m, no
date, Madero s.n.; type B†; lectotype designated here: illustration of Schlechter in Mansfeld (1929: t. 55, n. 212).
Encyclia edithiana Menezes (1996: 23). Type:?BRAZIL. Amazonas: Rio Madeira, without specific locality, September–October,
Oliveira. s.n.; holotype: UB!.
Encyclia maderoi is synonymized under E. replicata. Both types are morphologically similar and come from Colombia.
By observing several plants in cultivation, produced by self-pollination, we observed a broad range of morphological
variation in this taxon, especially in the shape and position of the lateral lobes of the lip, which poses problems for
recognition of two species based on minor morphological differences.
Encyclia edithiana also corresponds to E. replicata. The type material of E. edithiana was reported in the original
publication for Amazonas State, but we believe this is incorrect. The original plants used for describing Encyclia
edithiana were obtained at an orchid show in São Paulo State, and the picture in the original publication corresponds
exactly to a plant imported from Colombia in the Brieger Collection at Piracicaba, São Paulo (Brieger 2619, ESA!).
This plant was imported in 1955 from Colombia under the name of E. maderoi. Divisions of these plants in Brieger’s
Collection were soon provided to orchid growers in São Paulo State, and it is now one of the most common species
of Encyclia in cultivation in Brazil. The plant displayed at the show and used to prepare the type of E. edithiana came
from a grower in Rio Claro, just 30 km from the Brieger Collection in Piracicaba. In addition to the type specimen of
E. edithiana, there is no wild collection of this taxon in any Brazilian herbarium (Bastos 2014).
Encyclia
oncidioides , award 20152020 has been confirmed to be Encyclia replicata
by SITF (July 2015).
