Gastrochilus japonicus 'Xuan's Purity' CHM 2024-12-29 Determined to be Gastrochilus somae (Flavum)

Posted on December 29, 2024

Finding
SITF has determined this plant to be Gastrochilus somae (Flavum), not G. japonicus (Jun 2026). Dr. Emrys Chews (President OSSEA) in Singapore has identified this plant as Gastrochilus somae. Flavum forms of both G. somae and G. japonicus do exist, although the yellow form of G. japonicus has never been commercially propagated. The key differences between G. somae and G. japonicus are G. japonicus has larger flowers, a more compact growth habit, and the inflorescence of japonicus is a distinct raceme, while that of somae is subcorymbos as this one is.
