Finding
SITF has now determined this plant to be Maxillaria dendrobioides (Jan 2026). Based on new information, SITF has reversed an earlier opinion and confirms this plant as Maxillaria dendrobioides. The range of M. dendrobioides is Costa Rica to W. Panama. The native range of M. sanguineomaculata is Ecuador to Peru. This plant was part of a collection in 1959 by C.K. Horich in Costa Rica. It was subsequently identified as Maxillaria dendrobioides by H. Teuscher in February 1962. A key difference in M. dendrobioides and M. sanguineomaculata is that M. sanguineomaculata does not have pseudobulbs, whereas M. dendrobioides does. This plant which was collected in Costa Rica and which also exhibits a few pseudobulbs best fits Maxillaria dendrobioides. The native range of M. arbuscula which is also similar is Ecuador to Bolivia.
