Featured Speakers

We are thrilled to welcome Adam Karremans, Ph.D., Keith and Dina Emig, Allen Black and Manny Aybar as our featured speakers for this special event. You will learn about four fascinating topics - "From Seed to (Orchid) Success."

Adam P. Karremans, Ph.D.

Director, Lankester Botanical Garden Research Center, University Professor, Author

"Orchid Pollination: In Nature and at Your Kitchen Table."

Pollination can be 'make or break' for orchid hobbyists' success.  By understanding pollination basics, not only in nature, but in our own gardens, we increase our flower power. Demystifying pollination is yet another tool to take our culture prowess to the next level.

Adam P. Karremans is the Director of the Lankester Botanical Garden Research Center and a Biology Professor at the University of Costa Rica. Adam holds a PhD in Sciences from Leiden University, The Netherlands. His research focuses on the systematics, ecology and evolutionary relationships of orchids. Together with colleagues and students, he has developed a series of research projects focused on the relationships between orchids and the animals that pollinate their flowers and spread their seeds. The books Demystifying Orchid Pollination and Las Orquídeas y su Polinización resulted from these studies.

Keith and Dina Emig

Hobbyist Growers and Hybridizers

"Can I Make my Own Hybrid?" A Demonstration of flasking, deflasking and compots.

Join this husband-and-wife team of Hobby Growers and Hybridizers for a discussion and demonstration of flasking, deflasking and compots. If you have ever fantasized about creating your own hybrid or growing your own orchids from seed, now is your chance to learn how.

Keith and Dina are the owners of Winter Haven Orchid Nursery in Florida where they hybridize plants in the Oncidium, Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Vanda, and Dendrobium alliances but have also created their own genus (Emigara). They have received more than 45 American Orchid Society awards including nine for their own hybrids. They've been on a journey of endless experimentation to better grow and flower orchids for years. Combining the attributes of two plants, by cross pollinating led to building a flasking case which is a fixture in Keith and Dina's kitchen. More than 1,000 seed pods have been flasked and each season brings new crosses and exciting possibilities.
