October 2026

Featured this month

In 1998, forest fires in Chiapas, Mexico caused the declaration of extinction of 10 species of orchids in Mexico. One of these, Lycaste dowiana was already very rare in its Mexican habitat and only a few plants are known in cultivation. This month, Eduardo A. Pérez-Garcia tells us about the successful efforts of the Miguel Angel Soto Orchidarium of the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Orchidarium MÁS-FC-UNAM), to obtain material to be able to reproduce this species from seed.. Graham Guest continues his series on the late Andy Easton with Part 4: The Australian Species; Melissa McCormick brings us up to date on the work of the North American Orchid Conservation Center and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's research into the genes that allow orchids and mycorrhizal fungi to work together, critical to orchids in the wild, and Jim Cootes continues his series on the genus Dendrobium and its relatives with Part 23: The Genus Dockrillia (now included as a section of the genus Dendrobium).
