Summary
In this engaging presentation, David Edgley, Chair of the AOS Judging Committee and a long-time grower of phalaenopsis, gives the viewer a jam-packed lesson on everything needed to know to grow both successful and exceptional Phalaenopsis orchids. Starting with an explanation of the name (moth orchid), he quickly covers its geographical origin and habitat, segway-ing into growing conditions which he covers in detail: (water, temperature, humidity, fertilization, pests and diseases, repotting etc). He explains what works for him and what does not, emphasizing that growers need to experiment to determine what works best in their growing conditions. He presents the various types of phalaenopsis and the specific needs of each, ending with a discussion of where one can purchase good quality stock, and an awesome tour of his favorite species and hybrids. One unusual feature of this lecture is that David provides key sources for additional reading for those who may be interested in more information on specific subjects such as CAM (Crassulacean acid metabolism). Highly recommended.
