This award was published and questioned by a student judge. In reviewing it, the student is correct that this flower does not exhibit the correct characteristics for Bulb. Wilbur Chang. My initial impression was Bulbophyllum Jersey. I contacted the owner of the plant for additional information. This was purchased at an auction with a tag labeling it as Wilbur Chang. The exhibitor contacted Bill Thoms, who also agreed that they flower distinctly matches Bulb. Jersey. Specifically the form and stance of the flower and the shape and coloration of the lip. The first photo is the award shot and the additional photos were supplied by the exhibitor.
Award Description:
One large nicely symmetrical flower and one bud on one 17 cm inflorescence with six additional emerging inflorescences; sepals and petals ochre delicately lined cordovan, dorsal sepal lanceolate, upright, centrally stippled cordovan, coalesced distally; lateral sepals falcate, suffused cordovan on inferior half; petals lanceolate, held near horizontal; lip hinged, ochre, heavily stippled cordovan ;column and anther cap bright ochre; substance firm; texture matte.
