Maxillaria meleagris Lindl., Edwards's Bot. Reg. 30(Misc.): 3 (1844). This name is accepted.

Twenty-nine flowers and two buds on 31 inflorescences to eight cm long, pleasantly arranged around three-quarters of the plant with 14 ovoid, flattened pseudobullbs to 5 cm tall, singly leafed to 35 cm long on a plant 34 cm tall by 50 cm diameter grown in a 13 cm pot in bark mix; sepals and petals tan, heavily spotted dark maroon coalescing to solid dark maroon distally; lip hinged, tri-lobed, mid-lobe black, side lobes dark maroon; column light yellow; substance hard; texture waxy, lip matte; fragrance musky; recognized for intense black lip and large size of flowers.
