SITF has determined this plant to be Paphiopedilum barbatum, but not var. nigritum (Sep 2026). It is not var. nigritum because the latter is a rich, darker color form and this plant is the typical color. This species is similar to two others: P. callosum, and P. lawrenceanum. A comment made by Phil Cribb in his book about plants being imported as P. barbatum var. nigritum are actually small forms of P. lawrenceanum, but that is not the case here because the difference between P. lawrenceanum and P. barbatum/callosum is that both margins of the petals of P. lawrenceanum have warts, whereas P. barbatum and P. callosum only have warts on the upper margin of the petals. On this plant, it appears that only the upper margin of the petals show warts. The staminode of P. barbatum has a nipple-like projection in the middle of the lower margin that P. callosum lacks, but which is clearly visible in this plant, making this P. barbatum. It does appear to be a small form of P. barbatum, so P. barbatum 'Pigmy' is appropriate as a clonal epithet.
