Prosthechea citrina 'Sunshine Sarah Goldberg' AM-CHALLENGE 2025-11-04

Posted on November 04, 2025

Finding
SITF agrees with the Challenge that this plant is Prosthechea karwinski, not citrina (Aug 2026). These two species are very similar and extremely difficult to separate. There are some that think they may be synonymous, however, KEW/POWO maintains them as separate species. The key differences are that P. citrina has tightly clustered, round pseudobulbs, where P. karwinskii has more elongated, fusiform (spindle-shaped) pseudobulbs. P. citrina flowers are generally rounded and remain only semi-open, where P. karwinskii blooms open much wider. The Lip is the most definitive visible diagnostic trait. P. citrina features a round, spoon-like, concave lip with a white tip, no distinct veining, and a bulging bottom in profile; whereas, P. karwinskii has a longer, narrow lip, distinct darker veining, a ruffled texture, and a flat bottom at the midlobe. This plant best matches P. karwinski in these details.
