Finding

SITF has determined this plant not to be Restrepia tabeae (Jul 2026). The column is not greenish white as is the description of R. tabeae, the shape is different and petals are not down swept as is R. tabeae. Also, there are some differences in dorsal sepal.The plant may likely be Restrepia contorta based on a suggested ID by Alfonso Doucette, but several other options are possible, including R. elegans and R. guttata or possibly even an unknown hybrid. There are sufficient differences in each that precludes an absolute identification. Also, there is great variability in Restrepia species with changes in form and color from environmental influences, like heat and humidity.

One slightly cupped flower and one bud on a 3.8-cm inflorescence; plant grown in sphagnum moss in a 6-cm net pot; leaves erect, ovate, 2.1 cm wide by 4.0 cm long; ramicaul 3.5 cm long covered in 3 to 4 light brown, papery distichous sheathes; inflorescence held in a fascile and raised on the back of the leaf; dorsal sepal translucent with 5 maroon stripes, coalescing distally, apex marooned, bulbous; lateral sepals fused, notched yellow striped maroon, coalescing basally; petals filamentous, translucent, maroon stripes on margins and centrally, apices bulbous; lip yellow spotted maroon; column yellow, marked maroon superiorly, anther cap yellow; substance light; texture matte.
