Eight flowers on a 23-cm erect inflorescence; base color cream overlaid light mahogany, heavily spotted dark mahogany; lip cream finely stippled old-rose, yellow throat; column white basally light mahogany; substance firm; texture matte. Plant native to Indonesia, Alor Island. Recognized for its esthetic appeal, pleasant fragrance, and breeding potential. From Martin Motes describing this as a distinct species in the upcoming issue of Malayan Orchid Review. Here is the text:A New Name for Vanda tricolor var. purpureaVanda tricolor var. purpurea was described by Cecile Carr in 1932 from plants obtained from Alor. Carr reckoned it the most attractive form of the species. The plant has long been cultivated and prized for its distinctive and attractive flowers. Despite the vast distance between Alor and the Javanese habitat of V. tricolor (Lind.) with no intervening occurrences of the species and the vastly different vegetative and floral characteristics, the name V. tricolor var purpurea has persisted in scientific and horticultural literature. It is here described as a new species, V. kiattanii.Vanda kiattanii Motes sp nov.Etymology: named for Dr. Kiat W.
