Dracula alcithoe 'Exotica' AM 2026-07-16

Posted on July 16, 2026

Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Dracula alcithoe (Jul 2026). There has been some confusion between this species and Dracula simia. Both were described with line drawings by Carl Luer and apparently the two line drawings were reversed originally by mistake. The drawing of Dracula simia acually represents D. alcithoe. This plant is a match to the herbarium specimens of alcithoe and matches many photos on the orchidroots and other sources. The photo on the IOSPE appears incorrect and may be D. simia. The key difference is the form of the lip. Dracula alcithoe should have a flattened lip as does this plant and D. simia has a cupped lip.
