SITF confirms this plant as Masdevallia wuellneri (Jun 2026). This is a distinctive species. The only somewhat similar species in the section is M. filaria. The 2-apiculate petals and the lip are visible in the dissection photos. This plant is a very close fit to photos in the IOSPE and orchidroots.com and the description which has been added in the Award Description and Other Details.

Two tubular flowers and two buds on four erect inflorescences emerging from the base of ramicaul to 10.4-cm; plant small, caespitose, roots thread-like and glabrose, 15.2 cm in width by 10.4 cm in height; leaves erect, leathery, green, margins entire; flowers honey yellow overlaid with red stripes and light bronze blush; sepals fused connate into a sigmoid ventricose tube, narrowing at both base and apex, terminating in filiforme caudae to 2.0 cm; petals lanceolate, somewhat curved, 2-apiculate, with a thickened longitudinal keel terminating in an obtuse tooth, margin entire, translucent white, keel overlaid mahogany, yellow blush overlay basal half; lip hinged, lingulate, basally rounded, slightly narrowing in the middle, apex slightly decurved with two small fine apiculate hairs, translucent chartreuse heavily overlaid maroon, becoming more sparsely overlaid distal one-third; column semi-terete, slightly curved, with curved column foot, white; anther cap ivory; ovary ribbed longitudinally, chartreuse overlaid with bronze cast, 0.3 cm in diameter x 0.5 in length; substance firm, texture of sepals exterior glossy, interior coarsely beaded, petals and lip beaded; odor reminiscent of algae and fish noted; species from Columbia; matches description from type plate by P.Ortiz, OrquideologÃa 24(1): 4-17. 2005; ID by SITF:______________________. Ramicaul (cauloma) erect, 6 cm long. Leaf erect, coriaceous, petiolate, with the blade narrowly elliptical, 10–12 cm long x 5–5.5 cm wide, with a basal sheath 2.3 cm long. Inflorescence single-flowered (uniflorous), erect, from the base of the ramicaul, with a bract at the base, with a pedicel 6 cm long, floral bract tubular, 9 mm long. Flower brown with purple veins. Sepals connate (united) forming a ventricose, sigmoid tube, narrower at the base and at the apex, 1.5 cm long, laterally compressed, terminating in filiform tails (caudae), 1.5 cm long, the dorsal tail strongly inclined downward, the lateral ones extended to the sides; petals white, somewhat curved, biapiculate, with a longitudinal keel terminating in an obtuse tooth, 4 mm long x 1.5 mm wide.
