Acriopsis densiflora 'Crownfox' CHM 2026-08-19
Posted on August 19, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Acriopsis densiflora (Aug 2026). There are only about nine species in this Genus and the only similar species would be A. ridleyi, but that species has a notably pubescent lip midlobe which is absent in this plant. The plant is an excellent match to a previous CBR and the lip characteristics, plant habit, inflorescence and flower density from which it gets its name are all good matches to A. densiflora.

Habenaria bractescens 'Needmore' CHM 2026-08-05
Posted on August 05, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Habenaria bractescens (Aug 2026). Using the key from the Researchgate article, "Dos nuevos registros de Habenaria (Orchidaceae) para la flora argentina" this plant keys to Habenaria bractescens. The article also contains an excellent closeup photo which matches this plant. The petals of this flower are bilobed. The anterior lobe is that outswept, narrow pointed structure that gives the flower its width. The posterior lobe is what looks like the right and left side of the hood. That hood is those posterior lobes with the dorsal sepal adpressed to the back of them. Following the key, you get to couplet 11. This is a densely flowered inflorescence, making it bractescens. There also is a closely matching photo on the IOSPE to this plant.
Bulbophyllum psittacoglossum 'In Situ' CHM 2026-08-04
Posted on August 04, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Bulbophyllum psittacoglossum (Aug 2026). This is a very distinct species. The color, striping, short, two-flowered inflorescence and the very distinct lip of this plant all fit the species B. psittacoglossum. There is no other member of Section Leopardinea that matches this plant. There are two closely matching photos on the IOSPE and many more on the orchidroots.com.

Epidendrum subumbellatum 'Elizabeth' CBR 2026-07-29
Posted on July 29, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Epidendrum subumbellatum (Aug 2026). This species is very similar to Epidendrum dixiorum, but Epidendrum dixorum has a serrate-margined extension from the end of the column over the anther cap. Epidendrum subumbellatum does not have that extension and it appears that this flower also is missing that characteristic.

Aeranthes virginalis 'Bryon' CBR 2026-07-24
Posted on July 24, 2026
Finding
SITF reconfirms this plant as Aeranthes grandiflora, not A. virginalis (Aug 2026). This is a difficult call. The key differences between the two are: in A. virginalis the lateral sepals are always crossed, never straight as in this plant. In A. virginalis, like this plant, the plant produces plantlets along the inflorescence. In A. grandiflora the lateral sepals are always straight as these are. The literature using AI (which we all know is prone to mistakes) stated: while it is exceptionally rare, A. grandiflora under specific conditions, often high humidity, heavy shading, or a hormonal surge can anomalously activate the nodes on an old flowering spike to produce vegetative clones instead of a secondary flush of flowers. The plantlets on this plant apparently started when the last flower on the inflorescence was beginning to open. The lack of crossed petals which always occur with A. virginalis and plantlets along the inflorescence being a rare occurance, but possible, would not provide sufficient evidence to change the previous identification. Also, it might be possible that this is a hybrid of the two, but there are no confirmed cases of a manmade or Natural hybrid found between the two species.
Prosthechea micropus 'Mary Gely' HCC 2026-07-24
Posted on July 24, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Prosthechea micropus (Jul 2026). This plant matches P. micropus as described in Lankester, Vol 4, # 3, December 2004, "Epidendrum tripunctatum, the tale of two species", Pg. 223, Wesley Higgins. There is a previous CBR award to P. micropus, originally Encyclia tripunctata (synonym). This plant is an exact match to the photo as Pollardia micropus on the IOSPE. This Genus, Pollardia, is not recognized by Kew/POWO as valid. That name is taken for the three bright golden spots on the column anther cap, which this plant clearly shows. There is also an exact match to a photo on the orchidroots.com.
Lepanthes barbelifera 'Monkey's Bug' CBR 2026-07-20
Posted on July 20, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Lepanthes barbelifera (Jul 2026). This species is endemic to Ecuador. It was purchased from Ecuagenera. The unique petals are very distinctive and this plant is a match for the Luer drawing found on the IOSPE and numerous plants shown on the orchidroots.com.
Dracula alcithoe 'Exotica' AM 2026-07-16
Posted on July 16, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Dracula alcithoe (Jul 2026). There has been some confusion between this species and Dracula simia. Both were described with line drawings by Carl Luer and apparently the two line drawings were reversed originally by mistake. The drawing of Dracula simia acually represents D. alcithoe. This plant is a match to the herbarium specimens of alcithoe and matches many photos on the orchidroots and other sources. The photo on the IOSPE appears incorrect and may be D. simia. The key difference is the form of the lip. Dracula alcithoe should have a flattened lip as does this plant and D. simia has a cupped lip.
Jumellea arborescens 'Grace Carmen Tolentino' CBR 2026-07-11
Posted on July 11, 2026
Finding
Sitf confirms this plant as Jumellea arborescens (Jul 2026). The flower measurements fit the description and there is a matching photograph of J. arborescens in Cribb and Hermans' "Field Guide to the Orchids of Madagascar". The spur of J. arborescens is long for the genus and matches this flower. This plant also matches the images in the orchidroots.com.
Bulbophyllum coriophorum 'Castle' AM -CHALLENGE 2026-07-04 corrected to Bulbophyllum graveolens
Posted on July 04, 2026
Finding
SITF concurs with the Challenge that this is not Bulbophyllum coriophorum, but is Bulbophyllum graveolens (Jul 2026). The photo in OP, which is umbellate, does not agree with the photos of B. coriophorum. A mistake occurred when the Genus Cirrhopedilum was folded into the Genus Bulbophyllum and there were two species, an existing Bulbophyllum coriophorum and Cirr. coriophorum (umbellate), which was subsequently transferred to B. graveolens. This plant is umbellate and was mistakenly moved to B. coriophorum, instead of B. graveolens. This plant is definitely a match for B. graveolens, not B. coriophorum.

Kefersteinia mystacina 'Merlin's Beard' HCC 2026-06-26
Posted on June 26, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Kefersteinia mystacina (Jul 2026). The species and this plant have a distinctly unique lip for this Genus. There is nothing else in the Section Papilionatae that is similar. It also matches Weyman Bussey's photo on the IOSPE and five other identical photos on the orchidroots.com
Diploprora championii 'Bryon' HCC 2026-06-25
Posted on June 25, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Diploprora championii (Jul 2026). There are only two species in this Genus: championii and truncata. The two species are very different in form and color. This plant is an exact match to D. championii as can be seen in the images in the OW and the orchidroots.com.
Restrepia tabeae 'Exotica' CBR 2026-06-24
Posted on June 24, 2026
Finding
SITF has determined this plant not to be Restrepia tabeae (Jul 2026). The column is not greenish white as is the description of R. tabeae, the shape is different and petals are not down swept as is R. tabeae. Also, there are some differences in dorsal sepal. The plant may likely be Restrepia contorta based on a suggested ID by Alfonso Doucette, but several other options are possible, including R. elegans and R. guttata or possibly even an unknown hybrid. There are sufficient differences in each that precludes an absolute identification. Also, there is great variability in Restrepia species with changes in form and color from environmental influences, like heat and humidity.
Andreettaea claviculata Timothy Henry CHM 2026-06-23
Posted on June 23, 2026
Finding
SITF has determined this plant to be Andreettaea macroblepharis, not A. claviculata (Aug 2026). We would like to thank Alphonso Doucette, the taxonomist who originally described this species and A. claviculata, for identifying this plant as A. macroblepharis. A. macroblepharis is a much larger flower, about 2-cm wide and A. claviculata is only about 0.76-cm wide. This flower measured 2.5cm x 3.2cm, which would agree with A. macroblepharis.
Cattleya tigrina (albascens) 'Windy Hill' CHM 2026-06-21
Posted on June 21, 2026
Finding
SITF confirms this plant as Cattleya tigrina (Albescent Semialba) (Jun 2026). The color form is based on the pink in the lip (semi-alba) and the solid light chartreuse sepals and petals with no spots visible (albescent). There is no taxonomically published variety or forma recognizing this color group. This plant matches the description of Cattleya tigrina.

Bulbophyllum rubrum 'Catherine' CBR -CHALLENGE-2026-06-20 Determined to be hildebrandtii
Posted on June 20, 2026
Finding
SITF concurs with the Challenge; this plant is determined to be Bulbophyllum hildebrandtii, not B. rubrum (Jun 2026). The image of B. hildebrandtii in the "Field Guide of Madagascar" is a very close match to this plant. The description and drawing from the Field guide shown in the Photo section is a match to this plant, including the Zig-Zag (fractiflex) rachis. The species is endemic to Madagascar.
