Overview

Terrestrials arising from tubers. Leaves sessile, scattered along the stems. Inflorescences terminal, single-flowered or densely-flowered spicate racemes. Flowers resupinate. Sepals and petals free, the dorsal sepal spurred. Lip unlobed, sessile, much smaller than the other segments. Column stout, the anthers subparallel, flanked by conspicuous staminodes; pollinia 2, each with a globular viscidium.

Etymology

Named after Rev. J. Brownlee who collected the type material.

Distribution

A genus of 16 species in Tropical Africa, South Africa and Madagascar.
