Overview
Terrestrials arising from tubers. Stems erect, leafy. Leaves usually linear, sessile. Inflorescences terminal scapose spicate racemes. Flowers numerous, cupped. Sepals and petals free, spreading. Lip three-lobed, the midlobe often lobulate, with a short to elongate spur. Column with the anther lobes subparallel and convergent; pollinia 2, each with a viscidium.
Etymology
From the Greek schiza, meaning cleft wood or splinter, and cheilos, meaning lip, referring to the divided lip.
Distribution
A genus of 26 species native to southern and East Africa.
