Dendrobium General Culture Sheet

Light is one of the most important factors in growing and flowering Dendrobiums. Leaves should be medium green; plants grown too dark will become lanky, while plants grown too bright may show yellowing or leaf scorch.

·       Greenhouse: Provide 25%–50% full sun (50%–75% shade), or about 16,000–32,000 lux (1,500–3,000 footcandles). High‑light groups (Phalaenanthe, Spatulata) tolerate brighter conditions; Nobile‑type and Latouria prefer filtered light.

·       Indoors: Place in a bright east or south window with several hours of indirect or filtered sun. Direct midday sun may be too strong for some species.

·       Under lights: Provide 2,500–3,500 lumens or equivalent bright LED output. Ensure good air movement to prevent heat buildup.

Temperature needs vary by group, but most Dendrobiums grow well in intermediate conditions.

·       Nights: 55°F–65°F (12.7°C–18.3°C)

·       Days: 70°F–85°F (21.1°C–29.4°C)

Warm‑growing groups (Phalaenanthe, Spatulata) tolerate 90–95°F (32–35°C) with increased humidity and water. Cooler‑growing groups (Nobile‑type, Formosae) appreciate cooler nights in autumn to initiate flowering. Indoors, normal room temperature is fine. A mild day/night drop in temperature improves growth and flowering.

Watering needs depend strongly on the group, but general guidelines apply. During active growth, keep evenly moist, allowing the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly with lukewarm water. During rest periods (mainly Nobile‑type), reduce watering significantly after canes mature. Resume normal watering when new growth appears.

Avoid prolonged dryness for warm‑growing groups and avoid waterlogging for all types. Mounted plants may require more frequent watering in warm conditions.

Most Dendrobiums grow best in 40%–70% humidity. Higher humidity supports vigorous cane development and larger flower clusters.

·       In a greenhouse, ensure constant air movement to prevent fungal or bacterial issues.

·       Indoors, humidity trays or small humidifiers help, but many Dendrobiums grow acceptably with regular watering and good light.

Fertilize regularly during active growth. Use ¼–½ strength balanced fertilizer weekly or biweekly. High‑nitrogen formulas (e.g., 30‑10‑10) are useful in spring and summer. Reduce fertilizer in autumn for Nobile‑type plants to encourage flowering. Latouria and Spatulata groups may be fertilized lightly year‑round. Flush pots occasionally to prevent salt buildup.

Repot when new roots begin to emerge (ideal timing), the medium breaks down, or the plant becomes root‑bound or top‑heavy. Use a well‑draining orchid bark mix appropriate to your growing environment:

·       Greenhouse: Medium to coarse bark + perlite + charcoal. Little or no sphagnum is needed for most groups.

·       Indoors: Fine or medium bark with 25%–33% sphagnum added for moisture retention. Tree fern fiber works well for species that prefer airy conditions.

Repotting:

Choose a pot that allows 2–3 years of growth. Dendrobiums generally prefer to be slightly tight in the pot. Divide only when necessary. Keep 3–5 canes per division to avoid setbacks in flowering.
